Great sound for a little system
The trays might not be the most solid, but they do the job well enough. MP3 inputs, pretty good sound, good reception for weak AM stations even. This unit works very well as an home office stereo for me.
JVC UX-G50 240 Watt Mini-Shelf System
This product meets most of my needs. I was very disappointed the "shuffle" feature for playing CDs is limited to one CD at a time. I think you should have the option of shuffling all CDS or just one. It just frosts me that you have to listen to the CDs in sequential order and cannot shuffle them all. Oh well.....I'm stuck with this system. Thank God for MP3 players.
Great Sound For the Money!!
POSITIVES:
1. Sound quality. Wow - for $130, this has some kickin' sound quality! And with over 200 watts, it cranks loud enough for most folks.
2. Five disk CD changer is nice. One CD will play while you continue to load the rest (each loads seperately, not like those circular CD trays...which to me is a plus.)
3. The FM antenna, while just a little piece of wire, works really really well! I used to have an actual funky looking antenna on my old stereo and couldn't pick up anything. But this antenna picks up most of the stations around me - and I'm about 40 miles away from Chicago, where most stations are located.
4. Has a timer feature - kind of nice if you like to fall asleep to music but don't want to run the electricity all night long.
5. Super easy to get up and running - takes longer to get it out of the box than to hook it all together.
6. Child Lock on the CD trays! Important to know if you have curious or mischevious kids! ;-)
NEGATIVES:
1. It's basically a glorified "boom box", in that it can NOT be hooked into your TV or other compenents. It hooks up to an antenna (included) and the speakers. It has a USB port to hook into a computer and can play MP3s. HOWEVER, there is an "auxillary" plug in the front, and if you have the correct plug (not included), you can hook it up to a TV or digital audio player, game machine, etc.
2. The speakers come with their own cheap, thin speaker wire.....permanently attached. So if you're like me and throw that wire out and use your own, quality speaker wire, you won't be able to do that here. There's no way to get the back of the speaker apart to install your own wire.
3. Some of the functions can only be performed from the remote, not the unit (bass/treble, clock setting, radio presets, etc.)
Overall, I'm very satisfied with our purchase. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars was mainly due to the speaker wire thing. That kind of annoyed me. But despite the cheap wire, it still rocks.
Excellent System
I purchased this system for my parents. The system was delivered quickly. The unit was easy to put together. The sound is better than expected. The only I didn't like is the lack of a RCA jack input in the back of the system so I could run my parents DVD for sound.
A neat and usefull little unit
It has enough wattage and is perfect for a small room, an apartment, condo or a townhouse without blowing out your neighbors next door. It has 5 cd drawers and the system will play MP3's that has been recorded on CDs as well as the music CD's you buy at a music store.
Two reasons for purchasing this are: 1) To be able to plug my Sansa MP3 player into it's Auxiliary input (using a cord with stereo plugs on both ends)to increase the volume and improve sound quality. It works great for this! I know they have units specifically made for the IPODS, but what if you don't have an Ipod? Besides, in my opinion, an IPOD is very expensive as you are paying for the name. My 4 GB Sansa only cost me $99.00 (sale price) at Costco and it's comparable with the IPOD. How much would you have to pay for an equivalent IPOD?
b) I also have a Yamaha Keyboard which I can plug into the same auxiliary input (again using the stereo cable I mentioned above) NOT only to increase the volume, but more important, to IMPROVE the sound quality. There is a tremendous difference between listening to the keyboard via its speaker system versus going through the JVC stereo system. Essentially, you can plug any external output (ie: Tape player, Record Player etc) into this unit. How many of you still have cassete players or a Record Player (turntable?) ... I do!
The JVC has a Sound Boost button which automatically increases or decreases the BASS. However if the sound is too boomy or sound muddy, you can manually control the bass level if you wish. A neat feature! Having the Sound Boost on while playing MP3 Music sounds great, but this increased bass when playing my Keyboard makes the sound too muddy. No problem ... I can lower the bass a couple of notches and it sounds great!
It has an AM/FM tuner and a clock which can be set as an alarm to play music via the Radio or on of the CD's. And a Remote control, albeit you have to be within the line of site (from the remote to the unit) for it to be effective.
Yes, the CD trays are flimsy (as previous reviewers have mentioned), but with care, it shouldn't be much of a problem. You just can't jam things in it (as when you're in a big hurry) where you lean on the tray. It's pretty flimsy for this to hold up.
Over all it makes for the perfect Stereo System for someone whose requirement is to have great quality sounds but NOT necessarily blow out the next door neighborhood. Also, for someone who's on a limited budget. Great for a kid's room ???
Why only the 4 stars. OK, because of its flimsy trays and its bulkiness. It is fairly long approximately 16" in length which makes it stick out pretty far when you place it on a shelf or a bedroom dresser.
But overall, I am pretty happy with the unit!
