Excellent value
Great for home security/short distance use. Especially at a fixed location.
First off: I haven't used alot of Nv devices to compare against, so I can't give five stars (but most were much less usefull or even not quite as powerful than my own plain night-adgusted eyes due to crappy optics and electronic noise). This one works better than my own eyes by several orders of magnitude, is one of the lowest cost nv devices out there, and has the added features of directional audio amp', audio redording, tripod mounting, and has bushnell engineers behind it rather than "never-heard-of-em" re-worked chekoslovakian optics from the late cold war.
Plain (no IR) Night vision function: transforms the recognizability of a shadowy blob 75 feet away to the level of something about ten feet away, works just fine for quick scans of area (yard/driveway/parkinglot/campground type distances).
With IR: night and day difference, but only within about 75 feet. But although the swath of infrared light is invisble, the emitter is not, and whoever's downrange will probably be alerted to you if you rake it across them while they are looking towards you.
Audio amplification: I was surprised at how little this helped. the internal mic catches alot of the creaking of the case and swishing of your handling. the screw on foam covered sound restrictor thingy didn't really help to focus on sounds and does contribute to fragility/awkwardness during hand-held use. however mounted on a tripod most of these problems would go away.
Ergonomics/fit+finish: batteries are hard to remove, but otherwise unit is well thought out and sturdy feeling.
Is Very Delicate
