Seagate refuses to honor the warranty
I bought this drive in May, 2007. It was advertised as having a three year warranty, and I have a PDF copy of the Maxtor spec sheet that confirms this model has a three year warranty.
The drive failed in August, 2008, 15 months after purchase. Seagate, which bought Maxtor back in 2006, refuses to replace the drive or honor the warranty. They wrote "We have seen this before, and I am sorry to say the drive only had a 1-year warranty" -- clearly, the reason they've seen this before is because the drive was marketed as having a three year warranty.
A longer warranty doesn't mean a hard drive is less likely to fail. But I would never buy a drive with a one year warranty. And I would never buy from a company that refuses to honor its warranties.
That's two good reasons not to buy this drive.
cheap and fast
I have this on my computer as a second hard drive in IDE mode, may change it to raid mode someday. I wanted to dual boot with Vista 64 and 32 bit, but haven't. Otherwise, it works fine and is as quite as any other hard drive out there. I had a Maxtor HD failed on me before, but this one is going good.
No problems...
Other folks have talked about their hard drive was mishandled in shipping, etc, causing it to arrive DOA. I had no problems. I could have taken the Maxtor retail box and punted it off of my roof, retrieved the box, take the brand new hard drive out and put it in with no damage. Make sure you have serial ATA before you get this drive.
Not Very Reliable
I have had nothing but trouble with hard drives made by Maxtor and now that they are owned by Seagate it does not appear that they have improved on the quality at all.
I purchased this 500GB SATA II internal hard drive last November and it started to die in less than 60 days. When you turn on the computer you can hear the drive try to start up but that is all it does. I have to restart my PC 20 plus times before the drive it will actually start up. Lucky for me I was able to get it to start up and backed up before it died altogether.
I would not recommend anything with a Maxtor name on it to anyone. My Western Digital drives have been working just fine and I should have got one but I was tempted by the price of the Maxtor unit. BIG mistake.
Crappy hard drive
This is the first time maxtor has let me down. I always buy maxtor and this drive had let me down. I thought cause its sata II it would be fast well not at all. Secondly after less than a week it crashed. Please don't waste your money on this please don't. The problem started off by freezing during boot up then when ever I play my games they would crash .I have since then bought a new sata II hard drive for less than $60 and guess what it works faster and no problems. It would of been a good hard drive if it would of booted right and not taken forever . I forgot to mention it ruined my sli mode.No my pc won't work with sli ,all thanks to this aweful hard drive.
